Visit one of Europe's foremost art-nouveau sites

On a visit to the Art Nouveau Site, you’ll be able to appreciate the foremost work of Lluís Domènech i Montaner, one of the most important architects of Modernisme, the Catalan Art Nouveau, and the product of one of the most outstanding rehabilitation processes of recent years. Visit the Art Nouveau complex on your own or in the company of a guide.

Self-guided visit

The visit begins in the exhibition space in the Sant Salvador Pavilion, summarising the history of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, from its founding in 1401 up until the 21st century. On the upper floor, visitors will see a contemporary installation symbolising a dragon, a tribute to the figure and the work of Lluís Domènech i Montaner, who was a key architect in Modernisme, the Catalan Art Nouveau.

The recommended itinerary continues around the outdoor spaces of the Art Nouveau Site, reproducing the garden city model designed in the early 20th century. As you stroll around the gardens, take in the beauty of the buildings’ exteriors.
You will also visit the Sant Rafael Pavilion, where you can take a journey in time through a historical recreation of what a hospital ward was like in the 1920s. The exhibition space explains how the Hospital was run in its early days, the kind of medicine that was practised there, and what the Barcelona of the early 20th century was like.

It is interesting to take the underground tunnels communicating the various buildings, previously the site of frenetic healthcare activity. The visit ends in the more representative and most richly ornamented heritage spaces of the Administration Pavilion.
